Chimpanzee Problem Solving By Cooperation

A brief, interesting clip from National Geographic’s “Ape Genius” documentary, demonstrating problem solving skills in chimpanzees, by requesting cooperation. Also shows chimpanzees providing assistance to humans, by noticing assistance is needed, and retrieving out of reach objects for their human companions. As time goes on, it becomes more and more obvious that the great apes are our evolutionary cousins. I would hope everyone viewing this would be able to share in my astonishment and awe at the brilliance displayed by these amazing creatures. More Information: sciencelinks.jp Transcript: www.pbs.org

The guy looks like Dimitri Martin, learning from a chimp the right way to drag a heavy object.

Nakedhominid Posted on March 7, 2010 at 10:58 pm

Me too, sadly it would end up ripping you to bits :(

Thats what I said :)

senormidget Posted on March 7, 2010 at 10:58 pm

actually they won’t because they don’t understand the concept of pointing, they won’t look down the extended plane of your finger, they will just look at your finger

ARRRRRRR i wish i had a chimpansey

slingshot2427 Posted on March 7, 2010 at 10:58 pm

So would a chimp. Its evolutionarily beneficial to be greedy; by no means exclusive to humans

thecellarlife Posted on March 7, 2010 at 10:58 pm

the question is: if two chimps are shown the idea of cooperation, via the human helping them, will they help each other move the rock?

I assume no since it was not in the video, but its interesting. I imagine they would because they are a social animal.

molly8241 Posted on March 7, 2010 at 10:58 pm

the video was very educating!!! The Chimps are soooo cute!! = ]

ArchRascal Posted on March 7, 2010 at 10:58 pm

fascinating… best part is @ 1:00 lol

felixq78 Posted on March 7, 2010 at 10:58 pm

These wonderful animals have more sense than we do. A human would figure out a way to use his helper without sharing the rewards of co-operation. GREED

vampiredude001 Posted on March 7, 2010 at 10:58 pm

Try pointing at anything and see if the dog will fetch it. It can`t because they lack the ability to think abstractly.
