As a writer and editor for an online self-help, personal-development and self-improvement superstore, I am frequently called upon to review the latest self-help products. Consequently, you’d think I would be perfectly positioned and eminently qualified to tell you which is the best self-help product.

You’d think. I mean, how hard can it be to pick out the best self-help product?

Well, it isn’t as simple as that.

I can, without a moment’s hesitation, tell you which is the top self-help DVD or top self-help book. That’s a different matter. The top self-help product is the one which is currently out-selling all others. You can pop along to Amazon’s self-help category and find out which is their best-selling product for yourself. But you don’t want to know what the best-selling self-help product is. No, you want to know what the best self-help product is.

Now this next bit is going to sound a little glib, but bear with me.

The best self-help product is the one that works for you.

See, I told you the answer was going to sound a little glib.

Unfortunately, it’s true. The best self-help product is the one which suits you, the one which you’re comfortable with, the one that fits you like a glove. If we take this tailoring metaphor a step further: the only way to find the best self-help product for you, is to try each product on for size. Just as with clothing, you can’t make your purchase on the basis of what someone else says. You have to give it a try first, check yourself out in the mirror in your mind’s eye, so to speak. The only thing somebody else can tell you is what is the best self-help product for them, not what is the ideal product for you.

So, forgive me if I sound a little glib, but the best self-help product really is the one that works for you.

Go on, try a few on for size. When you’ve got the right product for you, you’ll know.

It will just feel right.

There are a number of Fibromyalgia self help strategies that sufferers may implement in order to relieve their pain. The following is a list of 6 common strategies that may help improve pain due to Fibromyalgia.

1. Exercise is one of the easiest and most helpful pain relief strategies for fibromyalgia sufferers. In addition to keeping you fit and trim, exercise also decreases recovery time in case of an injury. A regular low impact exercise routine can help normalize sleep patterns and assists with healthy blood flow
throughout the body. You should always consult a physician before beginning any exercise routine.

2. A healthy diet in combination with regular exercise is also a useful Fibromyalgia self help strategy which can help to relieve pain and improve overall health. A low carbohydrate and high protein diet that reduces your intake of caffeine, alcohol, saturated fat, and refined white sugar can lower the occurrence of common triggers.

3. Meditation is an ancient practice, which even today offers a variety of health benefits. Stress is one of the major triggers for Fibromyalgia symptoms, and meditation can be an affective Fibromyalgia self help strategy by contributing to the relief of stress. Meditation is usually practiced in a quiet, relaxing and private place. The practice can boost confidence by giving a sense of control over the disease and the pain.

4. Topical pain relief medication, or pain relief rubs can bring temporary pain relief to sufferers. A435, Bengay, and a number of other topical rubs are available over the counter, as are various natural and homeopathic creams with the same purpose.

5. Heating pads are available in an array of different types. Electric, cordless, gel, and chemical heating pads as well as “magic bags” are a few available options. Some of these can be worn under clothing and may last for up to 8 hours. Heat helps to increase circulation throughout the body, and to relax aching muscles and joints.

6. Deep tissue massage works in a similar way to a heating pad, but stimulates deeper muscles and therefore may offer greater relief. Massage stimulates the circulation of blood to the muscles and joints, reducing pain and increasing mobility. It is important to avail of a massage therapist with experience treating Fibromyalgia patients.

Fibromyalgia can debilitate and create at painful existence for those who suffer from it. There are, however, several natural ways of managing this chronic pain. There is hope.

There must be hundreds — if not thousands — of self-help programs and e-books available online, but can any of these resources actually help you succeed in life?

The truth is that many self-help e-books are worth while, and they can give you resources to build upon to create a better life. But they can’t create that “better life” for you. In order to succeed and create better circumstances, you must take 100% responsibility for your thoughts and behavior, as well as the results you are getting in life.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to two things: your willingness to learn, and your ability to convert the contents of these e-books and other programs into a concrete plan action to succeed in life.

Unfortunately, many people go from program to program; from e-book to e-book, constantly jumping on the “next big thing,” without taking daily action to put any of these techniques into action. And without consistent action, no self-help e-book can help you succeed in life.

As a life coach, I have been in contact with many people who could only be described as “self-help junkies.” Usually, these people are voracious readers, and have the very best of intentions to change their life for the better. The problem is that they seldom stick to any particular program. They’ll read a few the e-books here, and watch a few videos there, and try a few other programs that are similar, and in the end, they just become confused by trying to integrate so many disparate approaches to self-improvement.

The best approach to self-help (whether you are using e-books, videos or some other program) is to find a few resources that resonates strongly with you– that you feel passionate about– and a stick to them like glue. The most important aspect of this is that the program or e-book you choose is “right” for you — and that you believe strongly in it.

Belief and faith are critically important in personal development. Any program you choose to follow, no matter how popular or insightful it may be, is bound to fail if you do not personally believe in it. Belief and faith are what causes us to follow through and to take action. And without taking action, you cannot succeed in life, no matter what kind of e-book or program you are using.

And it’s worthwhile to mention that even classic books that have helped thousands of people, like “The Power of Positive Thinking,” or “The Science of Getting Rich” will not help everyone. Personal development is just that — personal. Just because someone else (or even many people) respond well to a certain program or e-book doesn’t mean that you will.

After all, making changes to help you succeed in life is all about personal responsibility. No matter what program you use, it will always be your responsibility to follow through and create the change you wish to see. Programs and e-books can only show us the way — but each of us has to “walk the walk” ourselves.

No guru, ebook author or self-help program can do that for you; to succeed in life, you must absorb the best ideas available to you, and then put them into action in your day-to-day life. After all, it’s not called “self” help for nothing.

The good news is that if you suffer from panic attacks you can use self help for panic attacks to totally eliminate all future attacks. All around the world there are millions of people who suffer various levels of panic attacks. There are wide ranges in the severity of the attacks.

Some people feel a mild physical discomfort whilst others seriously wonder if they are going to survive the attack. Their symptoms can be absolute terror, they could have a feeling of panic that goes through their body in waves and sometimes people find it hard to breathe.

Hi, my name is Cindy and I suffered from attacks for 3 years. The first attack came as a surprise and I thought I was having a heart attack. The tension in the chest and the feeling of not being able to breathe was terrifying.

My Doctor suggested a course of drugs, (he did not specify for how long) but I decide I wanted to try another approach, that drugs were going to the very last resort for me. I spent ages researching and listening to experts because I wanted to stop having attacks, I did not want to learn to live with them. Today more and more people are using self help for panic attacks and other conditions where the medical profession is not coming up with the answers.

The only way to cure panic attacks is to break the cycle of thinking about the next attack, having that attack and then thinking about the next attack. We all react to fear in different ways, but fearing an attack is the worst way to approach this problem.

The more you fear it the worse it becomes. With the support of family and friends I decided to take another approach.

I would accept that I could have a panic attack, but most importantly I would survive it and my life would go on.

This was a little harder to put in practice but it helped me to stop dwelling on the negatives and what might happen. This meant my general health improved and my high levels of stress dropped.

Taking on the challenge of expecting but not fearing another attack meant that the attacks happened less often, I was not letting attacks become my whole focus. That was a complete turn around for me. In the past that is all I did think about. Working with a person who had been through the same problem help enormously.

The best help for anxiety attacks is self help. Particularly because a critical factor in anxiety attacks is your ‘fear’ of having another one. If you can rid yourself of this fear then you can prevent further anxiety (panic) attacks. Here, you’ll discover how your fear of another anxiety attack can actually trigger one, and, how you, yourself are the only person who can eliminate that fear and prevent more anxiety attacks.

As an anxiety sufferer who has experienced the symptoms of an anxiety or panic attack, whether you are consciously aware or not, you will be worried about having another attack. And why wouldn’t you? Let us be honest, the symptoms are absolutely terrifying aren’t they? The totality of all the symptoms led you to believe you were about to die, so there’s no way that you wish to go through that again.

Now your ‘fear’ is such a powerful force that it has a real effect on your general anxiety. What happens is that your constant fear adds to your already higher-than-normal anxiety levels. By doing so your fear raises these levels even higher. They can be raised so high that the stress of a normal everyday event can then push your anxiety way beyond what your body expects.

Your unconscious mind then ‘sees’ this (quite wrongly) as a life-threatening situation and reacts as it has for thousands of years; by priming your mind and body to either fight or run away. We call this the ‘fight or flight’ response. You see, your unconscious mind can’t tell the difference between reality and non-reality. All it knows is that you’re in a highly stressed situation. It then takes no chances and assumes you are in danger.

The horrible symptoms you experience are the result of your brain very quickly organizing things to give you the best chance of survival. For example, blood is short-circuited from your stomach to your important muscle groups. Your pupils dilate to let in more light so you can see better. Breathing becomes faster for more oxygen. Your heart pumps faster to deliver the blood faster. And so on.

So I hope you can see now that the symptoms of anxiety attacks are just your body’s natural reaction to a ‘perceived’ threat. You aren’t going off your head, and, you aren’t going to die.

I know this is a lot to take in so, if you want to, please go back over what you’ve read so far. It is important to get a good grasp before we deal with your fear factor…

Okay, now let’s deal with your fear. You can see from the above that your fear is only one part of an ‘anxiety cycle’ that goes something like this >>> anxiety attack >>> fear >>> increased anxiety >>> anxiety attack >>> fear >>> increased anxiety >>> etc. Your anxiety is feeding off your fear, so that by concentrating on your anxiety alone (as drug-based meds do by trying to control your ‘mood’) you aren’t addressing the real problem, which is your ‘fear’ of having more anxiety attacks.

The key is to remove your fear factor first. This breaks your cycle of anxiety, which in turn prevents anxiety attacks, and, then makes it easier to address and ultimately cure your general anxiety.

So how do you get rid of your fear? You must take back control from your fear and diffuse it. You do this by meeting your fear face-to-face, quite literally. In basic terms you have to be prepared to have an anxiety attack! I know this goes counter to what you would think but it’s what you have to do. Instead of running away from your fear which amplifies it, you must embrace it totally and diffuse it.

As an example try this right now: make yourself have an anxiety attack. Nothing happened right? Okay, try again then. It isn’t going to happen. Why? Because you faced your fear of another attack by trying to trigger one. In doing so you dissipated your fear and so nothing happened.

This is just a small experiment, and clearly if that’s all you had to do, no one would be suffering from anxiety attacks anymore. Of course, it’s a bit more complex than that, but that gave you an idea of just how successful this can be with the proper technique, like the ‘ONE MOVE’ technique outlined below.

But even if all you’ve taken from this report is a realization that your next anxiety attack won’t harm you, then you’ll have taken a good positive step forward.

John Cielo researches and writes on self help for anxiety attacks.
Think of any fictional or mythological fantasy quest. By the end of the story, the heroes and heroines are usually changed in some way, transformed, improved. But it is rarely the finding of the mythological ‘quest item’ that is responsible for this positive transformation. Rather, it is the many experiences the adventurers encounter along the way.

In other words, it is not the destination which improves them, but the journey.

It is worth bearing this in mind when considering the quest for self help, self improvement and personal development. The search for self help products shouldn’t be perceived as a means to an end, but as an experience in its own right. The journey is as important (and, quite possibly, more important than) the destination itself.

As we browse through the virtual shelves of the online self help marketplace, we are, in a very real way, exploring our own personalities, our strengths and our weaknesses. Too often, we treat the search for self help products as an act of faith. We place our faith in the hands of the guru of the hour, who claims he can improve our lives in (typically) just seven days. When these products fail to completely deliver on their generally outrageous claims, our faith is often shattered.

The solution to this is to focus on the journey, to focus on ourselves, and not put our faith in the hands of others.

This isn’t to say, we should abandon self help products. Quite the opposite, in fact. A journey needs a destination, after all. We should try everything to improve and develop ourselves: self-hypnosis, the Law of Attraction, binaural beats, Reality Creation, Manifesting, Affirmations, Cosmic Ordering… everything. And we should take something away from each product, from each experience, from each little adventure we encounter along the way on our incredible voyage of self improvement. And, like the heroes and heroines of a fantastical quest, we’ll find ourselves transformed by the journey itself.

When rethinking this article and searching the web I found a book that was already published in 2003: the self-help paradox (1).

I read the review and decided to write this article after all. The book is about the overflow of self-help support that is available in the marketplace. Basically as I understand it, the premise of the book is that certain books will tell you left, where others will tell you right; one example is: “am I at peace or just lazy?” Now how would you solve this dilemma for “yourself?”

Another way to look at the self-help paradox I had in mind is that with the decision to enter the self-help arena you start to become dependent of what you read. Or put differently: you accept that you need help when you are surfing around the self-help titles.

In my opinion the paradox lies in the fact that the only way to prevent this is not to enter the self-help section at all. So it is not I’m lazy or at ease, but I don’t bother what or how you (others) call what I might be or not be.

Before freud there was no such thing as psycho-analysis. Now there is and there are much more solutions in solving psychological problems. Of course, not all self-help is of the same level or similar domain of psychology, but many books have that focus.

There are many self-help books on nearly any subject or niche. And in the article market it is one of the most heavy segments, both in number of post as in number of reads.

But even if you want to help-yourself, there comes a time to “have had it,” where you leave the self-help behind you. The moment you start reading the self-help section (like this article) you are not able to spend time on other activities.

An anxiety attack is one of the most freighting things you can experience. A number of the symptoms you will face can be worrisome. However, you can manage your anxiety attacks on your own.

Breathing exercises are a great way to release stress. Finding a quiet room with little to no noise will eliminate the constant stress that surrounds you, giving you time to truly relax and clear your head. Along with breathing exercises meditation is recommended. Also, exercising can help you feel good about yourself and create the image you want.

Most people don’t want to hear that it’s all in your mind, unfortunately, this is something that many doctors do agree with. Keep in mind that a majority of the time anxiety attacks are mental whether directly related to a chemical imbalance or something similar. Therefore, the greatest anxiety attack self help tip is to stay calm, stop worrying about things you cannot change and learn to control your emotions.

Many times panic attacks and anxiety attacks are due to a specific lifestyle or personality of yours. If you have a high-pressured job, you will sooner or later have built-up stress. If you tend to surround yourself in a stressful environment, or if you tend to have a great deal of pressure loaded on your shoulders and worry a lot, you may want to consider a lifestyle change.

The help of a support group is the best way to treat anxiety for many victims. Suffering an attack can leave you feeling lonely and depressed. It can prove to be an extremely valuable resource knowing there are people willing to talk to you who have similar experiences.

You can manage your anxiety attacks on your own.

Look in any bookstore and you will notice the section on self help books keeps getting bigger. Self help books offer a variety of tools and techniques to help people learn life skills to improve the quality of their lives. At various times in life, most of us face some form of suffering, whether it is physical, mental or emotional. People faced with these issues have a variety of options for getting help.

They can seek help from medical or health care professionals; work on the issues by themselves through a process of self help; or they can practice a combination of both professional and self help approaches.

There are many reasons why people choose self help books. Perhaps sharing your concerns with a therapist or counsellor may seem overwhelming. Being able to pick up a well structured self help book with clearly defined techniques may seem more manageable. Very often people start out with a self help book and experience personal growth as a result. Self help books train you to become more self aware and make meaningful changes to benefit your life. This is self empowerment at its best, when action follows theory.

It must be noted though, that not all problems can be resolved using self help books. There are some conditions that will require talking to a medical or health care professional for suitable outcomes to occur. Often a combination of both professional and self help approaches is best.

From Crappy To Happy is a self help book that focuses on improving the quality of your life one step at a time. It is easy to read and suitable for anyone 16 years and up. Transitioning from crappy to happy take time, it is a journey not a destination. As you take the journey through the book you will learn how to let go of limiting beliefs that sabotage your success and prosperity. You will learn to create your own self help plan for new intentions, goals and dreams AND how to connect with and use your inner wisdom to discover your highest potential. Increased happiness and well being come about as a result of practicing the techniques in this book.

Cheryl Cattarin has worked in the Personal Development field for over twenty years. Cheryl has taught thousands of people a specific set of skills to improve the quality of their lives. These skills are now outlined in her just released book “From Crappy To Happy” available at http://www.fromcrappytohappy.com
