1) Accept Your Shortcomings – As a person you may believe you have lots of shortcomings that are holding you back. You may see yourself as too old, overweight, ugly, stupid, etc, whatever you perceive as being a major personal problem for you. You may feel that these shortcomings hold you back in live, that they separate you from other people but the thing you must realise is that these shortcomings only affect your life if you let them. Ultimately you need to learn to let go and accept anything that you cannot change about yourself. it does not mean that you have to like it but you have accept that it is there and is a part of you, and then you can move.
A great exercise for this is to think of something that you perceive is a shortcoming and affects you emotionally, and say to yourself “I may be (overweight, old, ugly), but that’s ok, i don’t mind…” This is very simple but you have an instant sense of relief straight after it and it is a very effective tool to increasing your self esteem.
2) Fix Your Self Image – A self image is a perception of ourselves that we believe is the way the world views us. A low self image can be a big drain on your self esteem and thus it is vital to fix it.
Self image is often dictated from the outside world, the media, society, celebrities who dictate to us what is an acceptable self image and what is not. What you should remember is that you are you and that is all that matters, if society says you should be thin, glamorous, curvy, who really cares? That is not necessarily what you should be doing. Consider that in some cultures being overweight is considered a status symbol (bigger = better), yet in our culture being overweight is a bad thing.
In the end the first step to fixing your self image is to realise that in your world you have total control over your self perception, whether you know it or not.
3) Believe in Yourself - As corny as it may seem a huge part to fixing self esteem is to believe in yourself! A great way to help this new idea is to realise that no matter how much rubbish you have encountered from people in your life, after everything you have put up with…you are still here! After being roughed around you have survived and you still keep going along…respect! That is something that you should be immensely proud of and a great boost to your self esteem.
