A Few Important Considerations For Building Self Esteem In Children

Our children are our future, so it is important for you to mould them in their formative years and ensure that their self esteem needs are met. Studies have shown that children who suffer from traumatic events in their formative years tend to have several self esteem issues later in life, and as they become adults these problems may exacerbate into something worse. Nipping this problem in the bud is imperative, and this article will show you some of the more important considerations you should note when building self esteem in children.

Parents should know that children tend to learn and absorb the things they see around them. In their formative years, a child’s brain is like a sponge, constantly taking in every experience he encounters. It is important to fill that mind with positivity rather than negativity, as positivity tends to build a strong sense of self worth as the child matures.

In order for you to help build a positive sense of self esteem in your child, you should be aware of your interactions with your child. Show them your own positive traits and strong self esteem. Tell your child that it is perfectly fine for them to be proud of their own abilities, and any shortcoming is only a step towards success. Build upon their past successes by praising them and giving them positive feedback. Show your child that you love seeing the little things they get up to, express your love for your child in the best possible manner you can think of.

If your child shows a certain displeasure or sadness, you need to have an open channel of communication. Speak to them honestly and positively. Reserve your judgment and criticism to yourself. Your child may not be emotionally mature enough to understand whatever it is that is going on with them, so it is your duty as a parent to guide them along and sort through the difficult circumstance with a positive outcome. Encourage certain positive behaviours or traits whenever they encounter a negative circumstance. If your child is at the stage where he may be emotionally mature enough to come to his own conclusion about certain matters, ask for their input, get them more involved in the brainstorming of solutions for their situations. This will make them feel worthwhile, as you would have acknowledged his input as being important.

Also, if your child is mentally mature enough, get them to start setting goals for themselves. Help them along when necessary, but always ensure that the goals they set for themselves are not too lofty for them to achieve. It is fine to “dream big”, but keep in mind failure to achieve big dreams will also result in big downfalls. Do not make the goals too complex. Do not only give praise at the end of every achievement, but praise them even if they fall short. Dust them off and get them running once again. Always acknowledge their strength and ability, as it will go a long way in building their self esteem.

The Three Most Important Leadership Qualities for Small Business

If cash flow is the lifeblood of a business, then effective business leadership has to be the oxygen.  Without it, a company will shrivel up and die.

The best time to start laying the foundation for the type of leadership that will grow your company for many years to come is while you’re small.

How?  Through values based on vision, courage, and integrity.   Out of all the necessary leadership qualities, these three are the most critical to the growth and success of your organization.

Vision

A clearly defined company vision is one of the most critical elements in any small business, but is also one of the most neglected.

But most small businesses that become successful small businesses (and sometimes big businesses) have one thing in common:  Vision.

Your company vision defines who you are as a company, your core values, and your future aspirations.  It truly is your “reason for being.”

Your vision should also reflect your company’s unique strengths.   What is it about your company that is different than your competitor, or other companies in general?

Additionally, having a clear, strong vision motivates, inspires, and empowers your employees.  A vision that starts at the top and threads through the organization is an excellent loyalty and retention tool because employees like being part of a company that knows where it’s going and how to get there.  Remember, too, that your employees – more than anyone else – will be the driving forces behind your vision.  They will be the ones to bring your vision to fruition.  They need you to a) have a strong vision, and b) share it with them on a regular basis.

It isn’t enough to have a vision statement hanging on your break room wall.  It needs to be a foundational part of your business.  In fact, your vision needs be the basis for all your business decisions.

The best small businesses have a clear-cut vision – a vision that effectively drives their companies toward success.  If your small business doesn’t have one, you really should begin developing one.  Today.

Courage

Great business leaders are courageous leaders.

Let’s face it, it takes guts to start a small business.  It takes guts to step out in the first place, and even more guts to take the necessary risks to step up to the next level.

But beyond having the courage to take risks, courage leadership means being able to make tough decisions and take difficult actions -  doing what needs to be done in spite of the consequences, both personal and professional.  And courage in the face of fear is one of the hardest things to do as a business leader.

It isn’t easy to turn down a client because his values are the complete opposite of yours.  It’s hard to confront an employee who’s been caught with his hand in the till, or a receptionist who lives to gossip.  It’s difficult to say no to a potentially lucrative business deal because it might be a bit shady.  Or any number of the thousands of issues business leaders face daily.   However, to leading an organization with courage is one of the most effective

When it comes to courage, we tend to think that it’s a quality we need to exhibit as needed.  In truth, courage leadership needs to be a daily demonstration – walk in courage and you will inspire those around you to walk in courage as well.  Just think what would happen if we all had the courage to act on our convictions!

There are no shortcuts to courageous leadership.  You either do, or you don’t.  There is no sometimes.  And to start you on your journey, here are a few helpful tips:

Start being deliberately courageous in the decisions you make regarding growth, risk, and day-to-day operations.  The more you practice courage the more courageous you will become.

Resolve to never again “take the easy road.”  Have a clear understanding of your beliefs and core values, so when situations come up, you know where you stand.

Accept personal responsibility for the decisions you make, and encourage those around you to do the same.

Make sure the people you hire and promote are also courageous people.  Surround yourself with people of like mind and you’ll discover what a powerhouse organization you can become.

Don’t compromise.  Again, being consistently courageous is just as important as the quality itself.

Having courage isn’t always the easiest way to go, but it is the best way.  With courage, we can accomplish anything.

Integrity

Most of you have probably met someone in business who always does the right thing, regardless of the cost.  I am blessed to have known several, and the experiences have made me a better individual from both a personal and professional perspective.

Doing the right thing regardless of the consequences is at the heart of business leadership.  When faced with a decision, people of integrity will always do what is right.  And people of integrity tend to build businesses of integrity.

So why does it matter that we have integrity in our business dealings?  There is an unbreakable connection between integrity and trust.  In most peoples’ minds, they go hand-in-hand.  When our employees perceive us to have integrity, they trust us to treat them respectfully and reasonably.  Likewise, when our customers and clients look at us as a company based on integrity, they trust us to be honest, to give them a good product, and to keep our word.

Think about it…given the choice, wouldn’t you prefer to work for and deal with a company you knew had integrity?  I know I would!

Vision…courage…integrity.  These are three transformational  leadership qualities that will turn your small business into a business powerhouse.

Isn’t Goal Setting a Waste of Time, Is It Really Important?

The importance of goals cannot be overstated. Goals are an exceptionally strong motivational tool that provides us with a target that we can focus on.

Goal setting is indeed very important if you want to live a planned life. Whether its personal goals or professional goals, goal setting will lead to self-improvement and teach you the benefits of being disciplined.

Goal setting, however, is not a simple task and takes some experience.

So how should we go about setting goals that provide us with the maximum benefit?

1. Understand goals know full well, what a goal is.

For example, setting a goal like ‘retire at 45′ is significantly different from setting a goal to finish the first three chapters of the book you’re writing within a month.

The former is more of a personal mission statement rather than a goal. While the distinguishing line is not that thick, understand that goals should have measurable targets and a timeline over which major constraints can be mapped and planned for.

2. Set your targets.

Given the understanding of what a goal is, the next step is to establish measurable targets for each of the goals you are setting. The target would usually be in the form of a deliverable with certain characteristics.

If there are multiple deliverables, map them out with the requirements of each deliverable and prioritize them.

3. Identify resources.

Identify the resources available with you that will be required to achieve the above targets. The most important measure, typically, is the ‘personal hours’ that you think will be required in the completion of each task.

In addition, identify any other resources (for example, hardware, additional personnel etc) that might be required to be procured by you for the tasks.

4. Map out constraints.

The effectiveness of most goal setting exercises lies predominantly in this stage. You need to be smart about identifying constraints that will affect the overall timelines associated with the completion of a task.

For example, an employee might be going on vacation, or one particular aspect of a task might require external expertise that will be required to be availed at that point etc. While environmental factors lead to a number of evolving constraints that cannot be planned for, in-built or foreseeable constraints should be mapped to the best of your knowledge.

5. Set your goals.

Given an understanding of the targets, resources, and constraints, set your goal. The key here is to set goals that require you to stretch a little beyond your comfort level. This ensures that you remain motivated, have a competitive timeline and remain disciplined in your approach.

6. Monitor progress.

Have ready, a formal schedule and process for monitoring your progress. Quantitative targets lend themselves well to a disciplined approach towards monitoring your progress. But understand that you will not necessarily be able to defined quantitative measures of progress across all tasks that you undertake.

Where you find yourself unable to set meaningful quantitative targets, use your knowledge to set defined milestones that will help you map and monitor your progress.

7. Be flexible.

Though it may sound contradictory to the general emphasis laid on being disciplined in goal setting, a big part of being effective at setting goals is in understanding that every task is influenced by a number of factors, not all of which are under your control.

Hence, effective goal setting requires that you be flexible and adapt to changing conditions quickly.

Goal setting is one of the most powerful tools to get organized and focus your energies efficiently.

It is however, also a tool which is extremely difficult to implement and can frustrate you as you struggle to utilize it.

The key is in remembering that there are no universal solutions and you need to fine tune the process to best suit your circumstances and characteristics. Monitor your efficacy at it on an ongoing basis and you will perfect the art.
