It is important that parents know the right way of improving self esteem in their children. Many parents, unfortunately, do not know this and so their relationship with their children suffers as a result. Their children grow into adults who have low self esteem which later affects their interpersonal relationships with other people – all because their parents did not foster their self esteem when they were children.


Parents should bear in mind that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, meaning they should prevent low self esteem from developing in their children so that when they become adults they will not have to pay for costly psychoanalysis just to solve their self esteem problem.


How does a parent raise a child with high self esteem?


1. Do use words of encouragement when dealing with your child. Please remember that they are only children and will most likely make mistakes because they lack experience. So even when your child fails to do something, try to find something about the situation to praise your child about. You could say: it is not good that you took the grocery money to buy sweets with, but I am glad that you are telling me now that you did it. It shows that you are trying to be honest.


2. Teach your child to speak positive self-statements. Try to correct your child when he says things like: I am so stupid! I will never get this right! Tell your child to say instead: okay, I made a mistake today but I can go back and make it right. It is okay.


3. Try not to ridicule or embarrass your child, particularly in front of siblings or his friends. Children are very sensitive to being humiliated and we all know how merciless other children can be towards their peers, without thinking that they are hurting the feelings of that child. If you must criticize, choose your words carefully. You will be surprised how deeply your child will be wounded if you ridicule or embarrass him.


4. It is important to give your child the ability to make the right decisions. How? Well, try to give your child little opportunities every day to take responsibility for certain things. For example, you could bring your child to the supermarket or grocery store and allow him to choose some things that are needed for your house that week. One woman even gave her 11-year-old son the responsibility of choosing the house that they were going to relocate to in another place. The boy was responsible for various aspects of that task – from calling the owner of the house to make inquiries about the price and terms of their lease, to inspecting the house itself. Then the 11-year-old forwarded the information to his mom who was to make the final decision. Granted, not all children can take on that kind of responsibility but there are definitely other things they can do.


5. Have a sense of humor. It is good for children to see that not everything in life needs to be taken so seriously. A child who learns to laugh at himself when he makes a mistake knows that he will be able to bounce back from that setback. He will tell himself: okay, that was a very funny thing I just did. Now, let us see if I can do better this time around. Parents who tend to take everything very seriously are usually the first to feel down when things do not go always as planned.

How many ways of improving self-esteem are there? It plays an important role in everything we do. Having good self esteem makes one enjoy life to the fullest despite his social standing in life. In fact, some of the most prominent figures in society have problems with their self esteem. The adulation received by actors from the public is no guarantee of good self esteem. Some actors are desperately insecure off stage. Some rich and famous people are victims of low self esteem. Where then do we get good self esteem? If we have low self esteem, are there ways we can improve it?


Let us first take a look at its meaning. The word esteem comes from Latin which means to estimate. So self esteem is how you look at yourself, how you estimate yourself. It is a strong influence on how we live our lives. People who constantly received encouragement from home tend to have better self esteem than those who did not. Improving it helps us live life and savor our achievements.


If you have suffered disappointment and made mistakes in the past and now suffer from low self esteem then read these helpful tips to get you out of that state.


1. Think positive thoughts about yourself. This allows you to outweigh your shortcomings. Stop destructive thoughts. Daily do the exercise of saying something good about you. If possible, write it down and place it where you can see it the whole day. Constant reminders cause you to live and believe it.


2. Aim for accomplishments and not perfection. There is nothing wrong in aiming for perfection – however, most of the people who failed in this goal ended up unhappy. Aim for accomplishment and enjoy doing it.


3. View mistakes as part of learning. Accept the fact that we all make mistakes. People who do not make mistakes are those who do not do anything. Remind yourself that part of developing your ability and talents are committing errors on the way. We do much of our learning through our mistakes. We have the right to make mistakes, we are only human.


4. Experiment. Do new things, try different activities that will help you know what gifts you have. Your talents must be cultivated and developed. Take pride in what you have.


5. Recognize that there are things you can and cannot change. We cannot change our height or the past that we had. Love yourself the way you are. If you have the ability to change some things you are unhappy with, then change it.


6. Set goals. Plan what you would like to accomplish and how you would do it. Stick to your plan and keep track of your progress.


7. Do voice out your opinions and ideas and take pride in them. We all have the right to have our opinions and ideas be heard.


8. Tell yourself that you are a very special individual. Even identical twins are not completely the same. You were created as a unique individual capable of doing small and great things.


9. Respect yourself. This allows you to gain respect from others. More than anything else, love yourself, you deserve it. It is you who should be able to value your worth, despite what other people think.


10. Learn to listen to criticism. Criticism is an opportunity for you to improve. Often, we encounter unfair criticism – it is only fair then to tell the other person that we disagree with his opinion. Calmly get your message through with a smile.

Individualized Positive Affirmations for Improving Self-Esteem

Positive self-esteem is very important if not crucial to our happiness and well being as a human being.  Having positive self-esteem can make the difference in that which we take on in life, in that which we go about achieving and creating.  Having positive self- esteem also allows us to have healthy and joyous relationships with others, to experience true intimacy.  One could also assert that having positive self-esteem gives us access to genuine spirituality.   Poor self-esteem, on the other hand, creates the space for us to experience a great deal of negativity in life including depression, anxiety, fear, stress and loneliness.  Negative or poor self-esteem is also highly correlated with alcohol and drug dependency.  Some even believe that a negative or poor self-image is the source of such addictions.

One very effective way to improve self-esteem is through the use of positive affirmations.  Positive affirmations are very powerful for transforming how a person feels and thinks about himself, ultimately influencing how he views and acts within the world and towards others.  The fundamental reason why positive affirmations are so effective is that their nature or structure reflects what already exists in our mind.  Our identity or who we think we are, our current thinking patterns, are also a series of affirmations, composed fundamentally of mere words or language.  Everything we think, all of the thoughts that we have, are merely affirmations.  Positive affirmations, when used consistently, begin to alter our prevalent internal language pattern, as negative as it may be, our inner self talk or dialogue that exists within us.  The end result of the consistent use of positive affirmations is the transformation of an inner negative language pattern into one that is positive in nature

Improving Self-esteem

Hello and welcome to – How To Improve Your Self-Esteem Fast! I have written about what I feel self esteem is all about and how I improved mine. I am not a doctor nor am I an expert, but I have read a lot of self help books to improve my own self-esteem, and I believe that high self esteem is a huge factor in leading a happy life.

So What Is Self-Esteem?

Your self-esteem is not only how you feel about yourself in the present, it is how you asses yourself fundamentally through out the long term. If you have low self esteem, daily events can have a major influence on how you feel. For example, a kind gesture from a friend or a good day at work can make you feel great for a few days. And alternately a not so nice day can make you feel extremely low. And lets face it most days are uneventful and dull, so when you have low self esteem staying high can be a struggle! A good healthy self-esteem is based on accepting yourself for who you are – know who you are, and be content, like yourself!

Your Self-esteem Has Been…

Built and developed throughout out your entire life to this point in time now! And yes you guessed it, child hood had a huge impact on your self-esteem. All the pleasant, good, bad and ugly stuff that happened while growing up had an influence on how you rate yourself today. Healthy self-esteem will have been built from praise, respect and stable influences while growing up. People who were yelled at, regularly criticized, abused, given no positive attention, bullied etc, will have found it difficult to develop a healthy self-esteem. These are extreme examples, and subtle negative/positive experiences have a big impact also. Things happening that you don’t necessarily remember, or didn’t think much of can have been big influences also.

Argue With Your “Inner Voice” To Help Improve Self-Esteem

We all have an inner voice constantly chatting away inside our heads. It passes comment on everything we did/do/want to do. And for those with healthy self-esteem it reassures and compliments. For us with poor self-esteem the inner voice criticizes, puts us down and stands in our way! When you do something, like for example – compete in sport or go for a job interview, and some one praises you the inner voice will say something like “he was lying, you were terrible, don’t bother next time”. What you must do is contradict the inner voice, and snap back with something like – “He praised me because I did well, I might not have been perfect but win lose or draw I did my best and I’m proud of myself!”

Arguing with your inner voice will go along way towards improving your self-esteem, start now! Remember this, YOU are the boss, YOU are in control, don’t let the critic within bring you down!

Using Positive Affirmations To Improve Self-Esteem

A positive affirmation is a positive statement about yourself. Use them in a meditation technique, as well as through each day by saying them to yourself in your mind. Ideally you want to relax at least once a day and just quietly repeat some positive statements to yourself – playing some relaxing music at the same time is real good help!

Examples of positive affirmations to improve self-esteem:

Who You Are –

I am beautiful

I am strong

I am special

Who you will be -<

I can be a winner

I can be strong

I can heal

I can lose weight

I will do –

I will like myself

I will smile more

I will control my temper

By repeating these things to yourself on a constant basis you have no choice but to believe them deep down! You will become these things, and that’s improving self-esteem.

Self-Nurturing To Improve Self-Esteem

Self-nurturing is critical to improving self-esteem. Start by looking after yourself physically, by eating well, staying/getting into shape and having all the sleep you need – not too much and not too little.

Self-nurturing to improve self-esteem is making yourself feel worthwhile. Treat yourself regularly by doing fun and enjoyable things – especially when you’ve achieved something meaningful. You must reward yourself for accomplishments! Think of the things you like about yourself, and remind yourself constantly about them. Don’t dwell or punish yourself for failing – reward yourself for trying in the first place. Remember to concentrate on the good and learn to forgive what you perceive to be the bad. Times when you don’t feel good or positive are crucial, you must find things about yourself that are good no matter how small they might be! Improving self-esteem will come by doing these things. Acquiring help from loved ones can be a big help for improving self-esteem. Ask friends and family to tell you what they like about you. Ask them to be your release valve when you feel low or frustrated – by just listening when your letting off steam, this can be a huge help in improving self-esteem.

Your Environment Is Vital To Improving Self-esteem And Maintaining It

Being surrounded by warm, loving people is a huge factor in self-esteem. Now I know this isn’t possible for a lot, not everyone has a caring friend and family network. However you must ensure that those you do have in your life accept you, and of course you must accept them for who they are. A feeling of acceptance will help you to realize that differences between people are okay. Relationships with others will be easier to build by understanding this. Bond with those you see and interact with every day, do this by simply talking, touching while talking, showing respect, listening, being supportive, and being honest. Liking those around you and knowing that they feel the same about you is a huge boost to ones self-esteem!

Criticism

Don’t be sorry for who you are! If and when you’re criticised, for what ever reason be sure to “judge” what is said to you before responding. Don’t automatically apologise! If the criticism is fair then take it on board and respond by agreeing with the criticiser. If unfair then stand up to it, like with your inner voice. A well composed and self-possessed person will listen to criticism without interrupting and then respond. Be sure to give criticism at appropriate times, people with poor self-esteem often find it harder to give than to take. Don’t let annoyances go until you “boil over”, it’s usually better to nip things in the bud. Be tactful and try not to hurt another persons’ self-esteem. Use the word “I” not “you”, example – I have trouble when that happens.
