Personal Goal Setting: Tips To Turn Your Wishes Into Reality

In this short article I am going to lay out a few components that every goal must have so that it is not just another “New Year’s Resolution” that get tossed inside the “wish bin.”  These components are key pieces in personal goal setting and will make the difference between getting “there” and wising you were “there.”  So, do not take these free goal setting tips lightly.

OK, let’s get right to it.

Key Components In Personal Goal Setting

* Write it in a way where your personal DESIRES are included in the goal.

For example, if you want to make more money without having to continuously put in working hours and you dread dealing with customers, state your goal in the following way:

I will search for and read about how an Affiliate Marketer makes at least $2000/month and complete this within the next 10 days so I have an idea on how to create passive income without dealing with any customers.

If there is no real desire included, it is just a wish.

* Make sure you know when the goal has ended and that it is a realistic time frame. (If it is a big goal, create many mini time frames and goals).

Using the example goal above, the goal will end when either you finish reading a successful Affiliate Marketer’s “How To …” book or after the 10 days expire.  It is quantifiable and measurable.  Intensity is built in when you know there is an ending
point.  If you really need the intensity to keep you “in your goal”, tell your friend or family member you will give them $1000 if you do not complete this goal within 10 days, provided you do not become seriously ill or get into any serious accidents.

Look at all the games you participated in so far.  You knew when you won or loss and/or there was a definite end.  As you got closer to the end of the game, your intensity grew too.  This is why it is critical to include quantifiable measurements.

* Make sure you consider your goal BELIEVABLE and achievable.

If you have never played football and measure 4’7″, 70 lbs, and hitting your 60th birthday tomorrow, making a goal to play in the NFL is a little unrealistic, in my opinion (if you believe you can make it after doing some research, then it fits this criteria and I say go for it).

* Make your goal PERFORMANCE oriented and not outcome oriented.

This slight adjustment is very effective so make sure you use this one in all your personal goal setting.  In the example above, notice your goal was to READ 1 Affiliate Marketing book (performance oriented) of someone who makes at least $2000/month.  Your goal was NOT to make $2000/month (outcome oriented).  This is very important for a couple reasons:

1. You have MORE CONTROL in reading a book than controlling people to buy through your links on your website (this is how you generate income).

2. When you actually finish the goal there is a sense of accomplishment and now you have created momentum on your side.

3. If the you finish each goal (which is easier to accomplish because of the control factor), results will take care of themselves.

Warren Buffett, the richest stock investor in the world, runs his company Berkshire Hathaway in this fashion.  He rewards his executives if they complete each goal, NOT if the company makes $2 Billion in sales.  He cannot control the business environment and other extraneous factors, but he can control what he and his executives do.  If it works for a billionaire, why not use it for your personal success?

It’s Important That YOU Create Goals

If you feel you are not good at completing goals, you are wrong!  You are successful at completing goals already.  Look at all the (major) accomplishments in your life so far, i.e. job promotions, awards received, savings goals reached, graduations,
making the high school baseball team, etc.  Now granted you may not have come up with these goals yourself (some of them chosen by your parents, teachers, friends, etc.) or even written them down, they were goals that were successfully completed.

This is why YOU must start choosing what you want to accomplish because you can and DO complete goals.

Now your parents, friends, teachers, etc. planted these goals in your mind with good intentions, but did it actually get you to where you wanted to end up?

-you went to school for a degree…goal accomplished.
-you got a high paying job…goal accomplished.
-you bought a nice car…goal accomplished.
-you bought a nice house…goal accomplished.

Now, you have to WORK until ____ years old so you can pay off debt (as opposed to, for example, not having to WORK but still have income coming in through passive means).

Now if that is where you wanted to end up, then all those goals you accomplished were right in line with getting you to your “nirvana.”  Congratulations on a well laid out plan and all your successes.

If it was not the “nirvana” you visualized, then start writing down goals that WILL get you to live a blissful, fulfilling, and satisfying life.

“Do not wait; the time will never be ‘just right’.  Start where you stand and work with whatever tools you may have at your command and better tools will be found as you go along.”
-Napoleon Hill

And yes, there will be struggles along the way, but you actually WANT that.  It is overcoming those struggles that will get you many (addictive) natural “highs!”

Have you ever solved a problem that other (family members) could not solve, even
though it took you hours or days to solve it?  That sense of accomplishment after trying and trying is such an awesome feeling!

If you haven’t experienced this feeling, I suggest you look for something that another family member or friend cannot solve and solve it for them.  The harder it is for you, the better the “high” will be.  No drugs needed to get “high,” plus you can profit from getting “high” at the same time.  What a deal!

“We find no real satisfaction or happiness in life without obstacles to conquer and goals to achieve.”
-Maxwell Maltz

Personal goal setting is fun when you know what components to include and know that you are planning to go where YOU want to go.

If you do what all the rest are not doing (writing down goals), you will get what they are not getting (a successful and fulfilling life).

Make USE of these free goal setting tips and start creating a goal, now!

Staking Your Claim – Stepping Fully Into Leadership

I’m coaching a client (I’ll call him Steve to protect anonymity) who heads up the Planning & Development function for a large energy related company.  One of Steve’s biggest frustrations is working with the head marketing and finance guys to determine who ‘owns’ each incoming project deal…..Who’s driving the bus and pushing it through to completion?   Who’s accountable?

The president is consistently making sure Steve’s involved and this makes the president feel better, but Steve’s concerned that he may be held accountable for others when they’re driving the project.  He’s also concerned about getting his peers’ attention to seriously consider his ideas in the deal structure.

Naturally, there will be a very different focus depending on who’s ‘driving’.  The financial guy takes a more conservative approach, the marketing guy tends to favor the client, and Steve works hard to balance all the concerns to get the best deal for the company.

There’s many variables at play here…..Authority, Accountability, Influence.  Sound familiar?

* Influencing Others When You Have Less Positional Authority *

————————————————————————————-

Let’s look at the * Influence component *.  The underlying challenge for Steve is to step fully into his leadership role and constructively confront his peers when it makes sense for Steve to drive a project or play a bigger role.  He’s younger than his two peers and has a title one level lower than them.  Yet, they all report to the president.

* The Opportunity Waiting to Hatch *

————————————————-

What’s the opportunity for Steve?  I see he’s got a clear opportunity to stake his claim and step up.  When you get to senior levels of management, nobody is going to give you things anymore; you have to go for them.  You have to be clear who you are, what you bring to the party, where you can add the most value, then determine the relationship and influence approach that will get you there.

* Pushing Out Your Elbows *

—————————————

For Steve, he calls it “pushing out his elbows”.  It’s a great visual for expanding out and stepping into that bigger space of full leadership and potential within you.  And it requires taking a risk and asserting yourself.  It’s possible you’ll get some bumps and bruises, but it’s really the only way to find the edges or the boundaries in your organization’s culture and the individuals you work with most closely.

* Where Can You Apply? *

————————————

What’s a specific situation that’s calling you to step up more fully and push out your elbows?  What’s the best approach to move this forward?  What’s one specific action you can take this month to move that situation forward?

How to Put Your Home-based Business Into Overdrive With Goal Setting

Reaching goals in a home-based business requires a lot of creative thinking on the part of you, the business owner. When you work for someone else, you are basically punching a time clock and working all day to help someone else fullfill their big dreams. This is great if you are willing to sacrifice your own dreams for a steady paycheck, and there is certainly nothing wrong with that. Life can get tough and we all need security.

When you work for yourself though, you need to develop a different kind of mindset. You can’t simply just say you’d rather work from home and then casually get a few things done during the course of a day and expect to earn as a paycheck. Success in network marketing begins with goal setting, and I’m not talking about pie in the sky dreams that you simply wish for. You need to be creative and follow up that creativity with action.

Most people simply think goal setting is corny and a waste of time. They think that all they need to do is keep their nose to the grindstone and things will eventually happen. But saying you want a bigger house or a vacation isn’t enough. You need to be specific about what it is that you want and when you want it. Then you need to devise a specific plan if action to get what you want when you want it. You aren’t relying on someone else anymore for that paycheck so don’t rely on someone else to make things happen for you.

Your first task is to write down your goals on paper. Don’t type them into the computer or into your palm pilot. Find a local antique store and buy one of those ancient tools called a pencil. Remember when the teacher used to make you write on the chalk board 100 times, “I will not pull Suzy’s hair in class”? The reason that works is because you remember the writing part. There is power in putting your dreams down on paper. You can feel them being real.

Write down 100 things you want to accomplish in your lifetime. Separate these goals into categories, like business, physical, personal, travel, etc. Maybe one of your goals is to learn how to play the guitar, or buy a lake house. Nothing is too big or too small. You have the ability to reach any goals you set your mind to, so the sky’s the limit. Even if you can’t think of any possible way you could ever achieve the goal, write it down if it’s something you want.

After you figure out what it is exactly that you want, break down each goal into micro-goals. You can’t just wake up one day in that lake house knowing how to play guitar well. You need smaller goals to get you in motion. Take baby steps instead of blindly leaping into the unknown. Your first goal could be to figure out what kind of guitar you want to learn on, or what kind of house you want to live in. Then the next day’s goal could be where that guitar or house is located.

Smaller goals will eventually allow you to reach those bigger goals. The amount of time it takes depends on the plan you put into action. When exactly do you want to be on stage playing that guitar well? When do you want to wake up and drink your herbal tea on the deck of that lake house? You should be able to put the steps you’ve written down for your goal in a logical order and see yourself climbing them to the top. Which steps are missing? Is it too steep or not steep enough?

No matter what goals and dreams you have, it’s almost impossible to reach them all by yourself. There will be time when you need to rely on the help of others. You could learn how to play the guitar from a book or a website, but if you want to learn fast and efficiently you will need a guitar instructor. And what happens when you can’t find a model of the house of your dreams? You’ll need to hire someone to build it for you. Start reaching out to people and building relationships.

Network marketing is all about reaching out to others and helping them with their dreams. You will find that when you focus on this, your dreams will also begin to come drue. Just like you, they need to follow the goal setting system in order to be successful. You may find that in the middle of that climb toward reaching your goals, someone giving you a push might need you to climb down and give them a push as well. This might set you back a little, but think of the possibilities that lie ahead. They could pass you at any point, then be willing to pull you up with them.

You see, what it makes of you to accomplish these goals is far greater than the goals themselves. You will find that when you learn how to play the guitar really well, it’s really what you went through to get to that point than the act of being able to play well that makes it all worth while. When you finally sip that tea and look out over that lake, you’ll be thinking more aboutall the work you put into to earning that freedom rather than actually having it.

Allowing your goals to make you become a better person comes from the same mindset as deciding to set up the plan of action to reach them and going for it. This mindset will explode your business, and it doesn’t come from just dreaming. You can’t change your destination overnight, but you can change your direction. If you feel that your not reaching your goals, change what you are doing. Change what you are learning and who you are learning it from.

You are where you are, but you don’t have to stay there. Choose where you want to go, then build out your plan to get there.

7 Steps To Turn Goal Setting Into Goal Getting

Just like there’s a recipe for chocolate cake, there’s a recipe for goal setting. But if you’ve tried more than one baker’s cake you know that not all recipes are the same.

The ingredients, both quality and amount, will affect the final result. The order and method of combining the ingredients also makes a difference. Utensils, time, temperature and technique add even more variables.

The recipe you choose will determine the quality of the cake you end up with. What are your standards? Do you want passable, good or irresistibly delicious?

Here’s my favorite recipe! I hope it satisfies your appetite for success.

Step 1: Get Inspired

Often people set safe targets to hit – things they’re pretty sure that with a little extra effort they can accomplish. The truth is if our goals don’t make us a little or a lot nervous they’re not big enough! Lying to ourselves about what we really want because we’re afraid we can’t have what we want only leaves us jealous and discontent even after we get what it is we said we wanted.

As Stephen Covey encourages, let’s begin with the end in mind. Answer these questions before moving to Step 2.

- What kind of life, lifestyle, or life conditions do you desire?

- Where do you want to live?

- What do you want your work/career to create for you?

- What inspires you?

- What would your ideal day look like?

- How, where and with whom would you spend it?

- What contributions do you want to make to this world?

- What kind of resources do you want at your disposal?

- If there were no limits, restrictions or obstacles, what would you dare to aspire to be, do or have?

Step 2: Expose Your Buts

Write down all the reasons why you cannot achieve these goals. List every single possible obstacle that could get in the way of you having your dreams.

Keep asking, “Why can’t I have it?” or “Why don’t I have it?” until you run out of answers. Be sure to include all the ludicrous, inane ones too. (Your buts are the contaminants of your old recipe – they must go!)

Step 3: Bust Your Buts

Where did these buts really come from? Whose voice do you hear when they run through your head? Is it your voice, a parent or teachers, that of a coach or neighbor, maybe a loved one or friend?

These beliefs don’t have to be yours, unless they truly serve you. Challenge the beliefs that DON’T serve. What contrary evidence have you ever seen, heard or felt that demonstrates their falsehood?

Identify any person whose achievements are a complete contradiction to your list of buts. List any observation or experience that shows the ridiculousness, absurdity, or untruth of your old buts.

Step 4: Whys Up

No goal is impossible when the WHY behind it is strong enough. Answer these questions:

- Why do I really want this?

- How will it make me feel to achieve it?

- What benefits will it bring to the people I care about?

- Who will I become in the process of reaching this goal?

- Who can I help?

- What will I be able to do for myself, my family and loved ones, my company, community and/or humanity?

What childhood wishes did you want to make come true, for people, animals, the environment or any great cause that could use your help? What legacy would you like to leave? 50 years from now what do you want said about you and the life you lead?

Step 5: Simulate to Stimulate

Fighter pilots, astronauts and racecar drivers use simulators to train for tasks that require precision and exacting procedure. Through a simulator they can get as close to the actual experience without actually doing what they’re being conditioned for.

We can do something similar to prepare for and pre-live the experience of our own goals. We do this by engaging the mind and the body. Here are some ideas.

Create a vision board or screen saver with pictures that represent your ultimate lifestyle and the goals you will achieve to get there. Create a phrase that expresses your goal already achieved and say it over and over again throughout the day.

Write your affirmation/phrases 10+ times per day engaging brain and muscle while you do. Say them while you jump, move around, dance, sing, shout, run or do anything that gets you actively associated to these words and the vision attached to them. This helps move your goal from an intellectual concept, to an emotional experience and ultimately a physical knowing.

Step 6: Chunk It to Slam Dunk It!

How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!

When a goal seems too big or daunting it’s time to break it down or chunk it into bite size pieces. For added zest, celebrate after each bite is chewed and swallowed.

Consistent, manageable effort will get you to any goal. This is how you chunk down your goal so you can eat it one bite at a time.

When you get caught up in the mountain of little details that must be handled in order to reach your goal you do a reverse process. You chunk up.

Step 7: Up Your Attitude to Gratitude

Keep a gratitude journal. List at least seven things you are grateful for today.

Being grateful for what we have always seems to put us in a more positive, resourceful frame of mind. The more we notice and appreciate the little conveniences we take for granted the more we stay in this powerful state.

An attitude of gratitude literally accelerates the manifestation of our desires. Our energy is aligned with what we want and it is therefore attracted to us.

Don’t be surprised when your gratitude attitude uplifts the people around you too.

Leadership Training: Transforming Ordinary People Into Leaders

Leadership qualities are a prerequisite for an organization to be successful, in creating a harmonious relation among the staff members, to run the organization smoothly and overcome any hassles and so on. Some people are born to be leaders having the required leadership traits whereas some acquire them through training and experience.

Its very rightly said that no matter how much you have studied and gained knowledge, but leadership qualities are a must if you want to grow in your professional life and wish that your employees, colleagues or staff look up to you for suggestions, instructions and praises. An apt knowledge of communication skills is indispensable for a good leader or a manager or CEO to properly communicate the work among the employees, delegate authority and to avoid confusion.

Many-a-times even if a manger is well read or has acquired the best degree are not capable of handling his staff well and there originates lots of disarray and mix up. Just degree is not enough to cope with large number of staffs, their problems, tasks to be assigned in orderly and accurate manner, to create a right attitude and lots more. Praising your staff for their good work and suggesting or scolding them when they are at fault is imperative to run a business house skillfully and precisely. There also arise awkward predicaments from where the employees find it difficult to move ahead and are confused about the right path to be taken. Here the numerous benefits of leadership training come into existence.

With the advent of the new era technologies and the set up of various training organizations, now there is immense scope to acquire leadership qualities through training, lectures, sessions, management games and other steps. The leadership Development consultant institutes and organizations use hands on methods to train employees and managers and teach them the exact skills and methods to effectively and smoothly carry on their working and at the same time enhance confidence and self esteem.

Through the various modes and games like role play and others, people are taught to actually face the trying situations and how to deal with such situations when encountered. All the intricacies and the minutest details are properly taken care of and the lectures and personal interaction play a vital role in building the confidence and in acquiring the leadership skills. The one to one interaction, debates, discussions and the other effective techniques finally amalgamate to implant a leadership trait and skills in the employees and the managers.
