Goal Setting Success

Most people set far more goals than they actually get. This can be discouraging and cause you to give up on goal setting. However if you learn to set your goals correctly then you will actually get them. Here’s a simple five point system to help you do exactly that.

#1. Know The Benefit That You Are Wanting To Achieve

The most common mistake that people make in goal setting is that they don’t determine the benefit that they really want from the goal. Let’s say for example you set a goal to earn $200,000 per year. That doesn’t really mean anything to the subconscious mind. You have to tell the subconscious what that $200,000 per year is going to do for you. That is your real goal.

How do your want that money to improve your life? What would that new lifestyle be like on a day to day basis?

#2. Know Exactly What Will Give You That Benefit

Once you have worked out what you really want as a benefit then make that your goal and describe it as specifically as you can. If you have a goal in the form of a very specific benefit or set of benefits then your subconscious mind will absorb it and start working on it for you.

Notice that this may not be the actual goal that you used to start the process. In our example above we used a goal of earning $200,000 per year as a starting point for the goal setting process. Once you rephrase original goal as the specific lifestyle that you hope the money will provide you and used that lifestyle as the new goal then your subconscious mind will work to achieve that lifestyle, whether it can be funded with $200,000 a year or whether it needs $300,000 per year.

#3. Breakdown Your Goal Into Bite Size Chunks

It is important that you can fully believe, at the emotional level, that you can achieve that goal. If it is too big to totally believe in then your subconscious will reject it as being too far out of the normal for you.

The way around this is to break it down into a series of smaller goals that are believable.

#4. Take Goal Directed Action Everyday

Most of us have the habit of not always working no holds barred towards the goals we set. This gives the subconscious the message that we are not serious about that goal and it will take it off the list. The way to ensure that your subconscious in fully aware that you really want this goal is to take goal directed action each and every day without fail.

#5. Monitor your Results and Course Correct Where Needed

Not all your goal directed actions are going to produce the results that you want. It is important to monitor your results and decide which actions are taking you toward your goals and which are not. Then modify your actions as required to make them more effective.

Concluding Remarks

This five point system works really well as long as you follow it. Make a decision to put this system into action today on your current goals and watch the improvement that follows.

Keys to Goal Setting Success

A key part of every business or life plan is setting goals that provide a clear vision of the path you want to take and the things you want to accomplish. Many people make goal setting seem to be an uncomplicated and easy process. You simply define a specific goal and when you would like to complete it, making sure that it is measurable. Then implement your plan, track your progress, evaluate your results, and objectively make changes to your actions.

That all sounds well and good but I’ve found things rarely work out this way. A number of stumbling blocks tend to throw many frustrated people off course. One reason that halts progress before even getting start is setting unrealistic goals. Or nonchalantly setting a goal with no real idea how it will be reached. Many people often are gung-ho and motivated at the beginning of setting a goal but quickly find themselves disappointed and unmotivated.

So let’s take a moment and look at some important points that will help you keep moving forward in reaching your goals. First off, be realistic. Each goal should be achievable within the given amount of resources and time. For example, it would probably be unrealistic to set a goal to earn $25,000 per month in 90 days when you are currently earning less than $1,000 per month. A more realistic and more achievable goal would be to increase your earnings by a small percentage, say 5 – 10%, over an ongoing period of time.

Next, you’ll want to break your goal down into small, manageable tasks. Then schedule them in the order they will need to complete for you to reach your overall goal. Give each task a reasonable amount of time to complete. The total time of all tasks will give you a realistic target date as to when you will be able to achieve your overall goal. It will take some time and effort to establish this plan but your success rate will be much higher than arbitrarily pulling a time frame out of thin air.

It is also good idea to plan review times so that you can effectively evaluate your progress. The frequency of these reviews will be determined by the target date of your goal. Short-term goals may require a daily review, where as long term goals may only need to be evaluated weekly or even monthly. For instance for a three month goal, schedule a set time every week to evaluate your progress and make any needed adjustments to keep you on track for reaching your goal. This will take discipline and some things are sure to come up and interfere with your schedule on occasion. That’s ok, just be sure to define a way to make up for it.

An additional roadblock that will hinder your progress is the process itself. Take great care to not create a goal management system that takes more of your time than the goal itself. It’s best to keep it simple. For example, use something like a basic spreadsheet or if needed, a software designed for goal management. Again, don’t over complicate this area. You just need sufficient tools to keep you on track. Nothing more, nothing less.

Once you’ve reached your goal you’ll want to spend some time reviewing your overall process and actions. With an objective and open mind, this review will be a great learning opportunity. You will learn how you can improve for the next time and build on the confidence that setting and reaching your present goal has created.

In summary, plan properly and set goals realistically and you and your business will benefit tremendously over time. You will see constant and never ending improvement that impacts everything you do!

Success And Self-Esteem, Success And Confidence, Success And Poise

What is self-esteem?

If there’s any validity to the theory of determinism —that we are ‘fated’ from birth to be something or other— is how we handle our understanding of self-esteem.

Self-esteem is the core knowledge you have of your own worth.

Naturally, if you think little of yourself and believe it, then your actions will reflect that; soon people will also perceive you as inadequate. Low self-esteem will then become a self-fulfilled prophesy. Tasks that you could easily handle become difficult not because they are really unmanageable and beyond your abilities, but because you —yourself— and no one else thinks they are hard to do.

But no one is born with low self-esteem.

The problem arises out of sad experiences we suffer early in life. More often than not it comes from being humiliated by peers, parents, or teachers. Just knowing this point can take us a long way towards a more fulfilling life. People often say, “Don’t dwell in the past.” How true this is, dwelling in the past really means going over good and bad memories, except that bad memories linger.

No one is born with high self-esteem either.

In my long years as an executive in business, I’ve observed that the most accomplished individuals are those who exhibit high degrees of self-esteem. Not only are they achievers, but they move with ease in social circles and social circumstances. They are sure of their abilities to complete all kinds of tasks successfully. When I had to delegate duties that required representing the company in high level meetings, charity functions, or lobbying for government contracts, I found that the best candidates were those who thought of themselves highly.

A high self-esteem is an essential ingredient of success in business and in our lives.

What is self-confidence?

From high self-esteem to self-confidence there’s a short distance.

Self-Confidence is the manifestation of high self-esteem; it is what people see and appreciate in a person: certainty, decisiveness, and charisma. Just what do we see in a self-confident person?

They look their best. Seldom will you see a confident person badly dressed, unkempt, or disheveled. That quality of being ‘well groomed,” gives them an aura of attractiveness.

They speak well. In staff meetings, in doing presentations, in speeches, they shine. They are communicators who think and speak in full sentences, if not paragraphs. Those who are tongue-tied will have difficulty earning promotions, or even considered for plumb assignments.

They are givers not takers. I haven’t met one single successful individual who is stingy or petty. They gladly give their time and skills to charitable organizations. Volunteerism is the mark of a successful person.

They are self-starters. They are self-improvers. Although they have earned college degrees, most confident people continue their education in many ways. Some take extension classes; others attend weekend colleges, or are always engaged in some educational activity. They are “course takers.” With the advent of the Internet, and the proliferation of webinars, tapes, DVDs, and other media, there’s no excuse for individuals to stand on the sidelines while knowledge passes them by.

They are animal lovers. In my experience, employees who speak lovingly of their pets —in some cases with the same enthusiasm as their children— exude self-confidence. They can be trusted to make humane decisions.

They are dreamers.

What is Poise?

Many people associate poise with people’s appearance. Wrong! As we saw above, self-esteem and self-confidence are manifested by the body, by outward appearance and behavior. Poise oozes from the soul.

While self-esteem and self-confidence are terrestrial and physical, for these attributes can be observed and apprehended by the senses. Poise is spiritual and seldom understood.

So how does one achieve poise?

Well-poised employees —be they of any level— are concerned with virtues: prudence, fortitude, temperance, and above all justice.

Although well-poised individuals on the surface exhibit an adventuresome spirit, takes risks, live daringly, and sometimes even dangerously, they do that precisely because they have analyzed, anticipated, evaluated, the outcomes. That is to say, they exercise prudence.

It is not that they are impulsive, impatient, and arrogant, or contemptuous of failure; it is not that they trample or step on other’s toes, and are blindly ambitious—not at all! It is that they act with courage and fortitude, and with the assurance that the decisions they take are just to everyone involved.

Goal Setting Covey – Goal Setting For Home Business Success

Goal Setting Covey

Business affluence begins among having a vision of what we want to carry out and then setting goals to achieve it. However, many people set goals for this business, and end up either forgetting them or giving up on them. This outcomes in a failure to achieve this vision, such a lifestyle too we want. Goal Setting Covey

We are more likely to achieve our goals if they align with our values. So how can you ensure that your goals reflect your heart? Here are five steps you can take:

1. Reflect. What are your core values? What are those things you would never compromise? What do you spend your time and energy on? What are your strengths? Those things that you could spend hours doing and not notice the time passing? What do you need to do more of or less of? Spend some time thinking about your values and work through your thoughts and feelings about yourself, your business, your family, your faith, your total self. Then list 3 to 5 things you would like to do differently or change. Write your responses down to use as possible goals.

2. Be SMART. Now that you have a list of possible goals, prioritize them by importance to you. Then take the one with the highest priority and make it a SMART goal:

- Specific – Goals that are vague are difficult to pursue. If you make your goals reasonably specific, then you will have a clearer target to aim at. Include as much detail as possible when you write down your goal. Goal Setting Covey

- Measurable – When you have measures for your goals, you are able to track your progress as well as more easily determine how well you have achieved your goals. The idea here is to have some type of yardstick against which you can measure your progress. Perhaps you identify some quantitative targets for tracking your progress.

- Aligned – If you are in network marketing or direct sales, you will want to align your goals with your company’s goals so that you ensure that you are directing your energy in the right direction.

- Results-focused – If you craft your goal well, it will specify an important result or outcome that you hold yourself accountable to achieve. Most people write their goals in terms of actions they plan to take (i.e., make 20 calls a day, distribute 10 company dvds a week, attend 4 training events a month, etc.). It’s fine to know the action steps you need to take, but what is the true result you’re seeking when performing these steps? Goal Setting Covey

Stay focused on the desired end result when creating your goals. As Stephen Covey says, begin with the end in mind. Allow your goals to help you focus on the results your are expected to produce.
