Six Sigma As The Ultimate Management Tool

Six Sigma uses two methodologies, namely DMAIC and DMADV to take care of the existing processes and the new processes that need to be developed for reducing the defects and raising the quality respectively. These two process improvement methodologies are recognized as the finest quality management system that the commercial world has ever experienced.

Six Sigma, The Stepping Stone To Success

The question that crosses everybody’s mind is – what makes Six Sigma such a high caliber, fine quality process improvement tool? Six Sigma was Motorola’s biggest and most successful implementation quality improvement process. The comprehensive and structured approach of 6 Sigma reportedly saved the company millions of dollars. The structure of Six Sigma covers the entire pyramid of the organization and requires everyone to devote 100% of their time towards implementation.

The best thing about the 6 Sigma approach is that it involves the entire organization in the implementation process. Top management is given key roles such as identifying and reviewing projects. The middle level management group consists of Champions and Master Black Belts that take it upon themselves to solve problems and remove any trans-jurisdictional bottlenecks.

Bottlenecks can pose a threat to successful implementation of the strategies and the Champions have to handle them like veteran combatants. The Master Black Belts, on the other hand, need to be extraordinarily talented in problem solving and in utilizing the complicated statistical tools. If an organization wants to reap all the benefits of Six Sigma, then everybody will be required to put their best foot forward and act in unison.

How Effective Is it?

The statistical tools that are used are very sophisticated, versatile and have a highly customized approach towards each problem. 6 Sigma is touted as the ultimate management tool – and why not – with its achievement level of 3.4 defects in per million chances, saving million of dollars for the company and satisfying customers. But is it really the ultimate management tool for an organization or is the success of 6 Sigma a result of just a lot of hype?

On January 22, 2001 the failure of 6 Sigma strategy to position Iridium, the satellite phone by Motorola as “the” satellite phone and erase all its competitors fell flat. The phone, despite the glitzy publicity and state-of-the-art engineering was a total flop and it also raised questions on the claims of Six Sigma being 99.9997% accurate and effective. It also threw light on another and till now unnoticed aspect of 6 Sigma and that is, Six Sigma only assures quality and not customer satisfaction.

Critics pointed out that there were certain statistical snags like the Six Sigma not moving methodically on to different assignments and not using tools like decision theory and cost-benefit analysis.

Therefore, we can conclude that Six Sigma is just a methodology to perfect the process and improve quality and thus, increasing the customer satisfaction level of those customers who buy the products.

 Types of Goals

Short-term or Immediate – A desire you have now, next month, before the year ends.

Intermediate – A goal that you want to achieve in a period of one to three years.

Long-range or Long-term - A goal that you could achieve in several years (three or more).

Ultimate – A goal that may never be completed. For example, to become the complete person that you wish to be.

A person may have many different goals and many types of goals at the same time. For example, a person may have a fitness goal, a career goal, and a family/relationship goal at the same time. Small, more detail-oriented goals can also be set and ultimately achieved and new ones subsequently set. An example of this would be that a person who is working on developing upper body strength might start with modified push-ups from the knee and have a short-term goal of doing ten such push-ups, an intermediate goal of doing one regular push-up, a long-range goal of doing ten regular push-ups, and an ultimate goal of doing one pull-up. Precise, detail-oriented goals such as the one above may allow the ultimate goal to be met and then reset at a new, higher standard.

The Physical Stress Test – A Great Stress Management Tool!

Psychologists and counselors the world over treat people with stress. For a successful treatment a successful diagnosis of the problem is needed, as with medical field as well. The physical stress test is one of the most popular tests to get an idea of a client’s stress level. Stress does manifest itself in the physical body, more often than not. Stress shows up in the body as illnesses and ailments. These can be headaches like migraines, and other forms like sweaty hands or nausea. The physical stress test is used to indicate the level of stress that such patients undergo, and it has proved reliable over the years.

In order to pose as a stress management tools, the physical stress test involves the use of evaluating the responses of patients against a list of physical illnesses and ailments, in a grid pattern. About forty such ailments are mentioned on the pattern. The test involves a point rating system to estimate the stress a person is undergoing. Points between 40 and 75 tell us the patient is undergoing less stress. 75 to 100 points indicate moderate stress, 100 to 150 indicates high stress and anything above that calls for immediate help.

Once the therapist has determined the stress level using the physical stress test; he moves on to psychological questions which also pose as an indicator of stress level. These questions are generally about the patient’s personal points of view about life.

When we are dealing with stress management we are actually dealing with factors that initiate the stress, which are not always physical. True, some physical factors like biological agents and the temperature could cause stress. But more often than not when we are dealing with stress, we are dealing with psychological stress agents that initiate the stress. When the brain undergoes stress, its affects are manifested in various body parts as physical ailments.

The physical and psychological tests mentioned above are both time-tested stress tests and can well stand on their own. However, when a psychologist feels the need he may use both tests to confirm his readings. He may do that for example, when the stress level readings seem unusually high or low.

The identification of stress factors is not difficult at all and most of us could well do it for our selves. However, it is sometimes difficult to analyze your own self, analyzing another person is always easier. Hence we resort to meeting psychologists and counselors regarding the same. Do not be fearful or feel ashamed that you may have to meet a counselor to handle your stress. There is not one among us who does not feel stress, and it is healthy that you are aiming to handle this in your life.

Self Hypnosis As a Problem Solving Tool

Hypnosis is an art and a science which can be used by anyone as a tool to resolve problems. It is not a black magic and there is nothing mysterious about it.

Hypnosis works on our mind. The mind is divided into two broad categories – conscious mind and subconscious mind. We use conscious mind for thinking, reasoning and rationalization. The conscious mind forms a small part of the mind.

By far the more dominating part of our mind is the subconscious mind. It has control on how we behave and think in real life. It controls our basic attitude, thinking pattern and the way we react to constant stimuli we receive all the time from outside world. It is also the repository of all life’s memories and experience.

Our success and failure are directly dependent upon the choices we make in our lives. And the choices we make are influenced by the subconscious mind. While making the choices the subconscious mind tries to re-live the past experience. Among the vast data of feelings, emotions and experience stored in the subconscious mind there will be some more dominant than others. The subconscious mind tends to create the dominant experience again and again. In a way it tries to justify that the dominant experience deserves to remain dominant.

All of us want to change for better, we want to succeed and we want to make winning a habit. But our subconscious mind will only work to reinforce its own world-view. Being dominant it will also make us behave likewise.

If subconscious mind has such a strong influence on our actions, why not harness its influencing power to get desired results?

This is where hypnosis comes in. By hypnosis it is possible to change the belief system or the world-view being held by the subconscious mind. For example, let us say that the subconscious mind thinks that I cannot speak in public. By not being able to speak in public I generate certain emotions which could be self-pity, repentance, sense of failure, feeling of getting a raw deal from the world etc. These emotions have become dominant because of my past experience in life. When I try to speak in public next time, unless I am better prepared, the chances are that I will fail miserably, evoke those feelings again and the subconscious mind will happily confirm that its belief system is intact.

By hypnosis it is possible to remove the mental inhibitions. It is possible to alter the subconscious mind’s belief system. When that happens the subconscious mind becomes a formidable force which will try to reinforce its new belief system. It will bring all the resources to justify its altered viewpoint.

Just by harnessing the power of our subconscious using hypnosis, we can remove our inhibitions which prevent us from speaking in public or behaving confidently. We can remove what we think are our limitations – such as the feeling that I cannot succeed or cannot reduce weight or cannot give up smoking.

Let us face a hard fact of life. As adults we are totally responsible for our present situation in life. Most of us are not happy with what we have. We hold the entire world responsible except ourselves for the state of affairs we are in. But the fact remains that we are in the present state only, and I repeat, only because of the choices we have made in our lives. We have subconsciously allowed ourselves to believe that we cannot have a better deal. We have really reconciled ourselves with what we have and rarely attempt to cross our self-imposed boundary. But it does not have to be that way. There are ways to break free from our shell.

Now we know that ALL our problems originate from the conviction held by the subconscious mind. There is simply no other source of our problems. And it is possible to change this conviction by hypnosis. This means we have the power to resolve all our problems when we make good use of the power with us.

The scope of hypnosis is endless and can be applied to virtually any situation where we wish to improve. The art of self hypnosis can be mastered by anyone. All you need is a firm resolve to improve yourself.
